Part of the AHDB Maternal Matters campaign looks at how to improve productivity and profitability in the suckler herd through the use of maternal traits. Difficult calvings have a huge impact on the performance of a suckler herd and have a detrimental effect on calf performance and cow fertility. Selecting bulls which have easy calving EBVs is one way to avoid them, however, getting your vet to pelvic measure and score bulling heifers is another way to remove heifers that won’t calve easily, leaving the most profitable animals to breed from. On this webinar we will be joined by Dr Jenny Hull from Black Sheep Animal Health, Dedicated Farm Vets who will explain how the pelvic scoring is done and the benefits it can have when it comes to calving.

Dr Jenny Hull BVetMed CertAVP (Sheep) MRCVS

Jenny graduated from The Royal Vet College in 2007 and has worked in Northumberland since graduation. Her interests include BVD, and proactive flock and herd health planning and goat medicine.  She is a member of the Sheep Veterinary Society, Goat Veterinary Society and a board member and director of the British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA).  She currently sits on the BVDFREE ENGLAND board, Red Tractor standards technical board, Animal Health and Welfare Pathway working group, is involved in government liaison work from a low-risk TB area and part of the ‘Antibiotics Targets Taskforce’.
