Brian Bolton (President and CEO, Allflex USA, 3613 Hidden Trail, Flower Mound, Texas 75022, USA)
High feed costs, labour supply, high cost environmental and welfare pressures, an inability to influence farm gate prices individually, managing expansion, learning to produce dairy beef - are these familiar themes? The US dairy industry is diverse even if the trend to 'fewer/larger' continues, consequently innovative solutions are constantly sought, adapted and applied. Mike Colwell (Farmer, Glyn Crest Farm, Wheal Rose, Scorrier, Redruth, Cornwall, TR16 5DH)

In this paper I will describe our three steps towards this goal on the tenant farm step ladder, how the structure of our business (with little machinery and maximum stock) is going to keep us moving up that ladder. The general theme will be keep your machinery costs low, take opportunities that come along, don't be afraid of massive risk and above all keep the system simple.
