"Health, Wealth and Happiness"
The Conference continued its tradition of informing the industry of the new challenges and opportunities in respect of disease prevention and monitoring to improve animal health and welfare. In addition, presentations from our European neighbours demonstrated the progress that may be achieved through cooperation and integration of resources.
The Beef programme focused on a broad spectrum of topics relating to practical issues of animal health, out wintering, management and disease surveillance, leading to improved production efficiencies and profitability.
The Dairy day focus of government policy towards disease monitoring and control was followed by presentations on how best to implement sustainable farming practices within the government's animal health and welfare strategy. A presentation on the introduction of new genetic evaluation methodology was complimented by an array of successful dairy farmers and veterinary practitioners who had developed specific management programmes to meet individual business and industry requirements.
The British Cattle Conference proved again it is far more than just a conference, it is the fulcrum of informed debate on the continuing development of UK cattle breeding.
My appreciation and thanks go to the Club Committee and Secretary, Lesley Lewin and especially to Vice Chairman, Duncan Pullar for all his work in organising the Beef day.
David Hewitt, Conference Chairman
